Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’ receives 8 minute standing ovation at Cannes

A huge moment for South Korean film director
Bong Joon-ho Tuesday night at the Cannes Film Festival. He got an eight-minute standing ovation for
his latest film ‘Parasite’. Our Kim Da-mi reports. For 8 minutes straight on Tuesday night, the
audience at the Cannes Grand Theatre Lumiere was on its feet, clapping and cheering for
South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and his masterpiece ‘Parasite’. Known for socially conscious films like ‘The
Host’ and ‘Okja’, Bong described himself a genre movie director who doesn’t like to follow
the rules of genre films. “I don’t like to follow the conventions or
codes for genre films, I try to convey messages about society through these broken codes.” ‘Parasite’ portrays the story of a poor family
getting involved with a wealthy family after their son works as a tutor for the rich family’s
daughter. Renowned South Korean actors Song Kang-ho,
Cho Yeo-jeong and Lee Sun-kyun star in the film. “Mr. Bong always has a quite keen eye when
he analyzes society, this shows in all his films. In ‘Parasite’ in particular, we can see the
whole evolution, the development of Korean cinema.” Presenting for the fifth time at Cannes, Bong
is making his second attempt to win the Palme d’Or in the main competition section. He previously tried to win the prestigious
award with ‘Okja’ in 2017. The winner will be announced on the 25th,
the last day of the 72nd edition of the film festival. Called “giddy” and “brilliant” by film magazine
IndieWire,…’Parasite’ will be released on May 30th in South Korea. Kim Da-mi, Arirang News.
