Public housing residents live in fear of bed bugs

JEFF: PEOPLE LIVING IN A MULTNOMAH COUNTY HOUSING COMPLEX TELL US BEDBUGS ARE A PROBLEM THAT KEEPS GETTING WORSE. THE NORTHWEST PORTLAND COMPLEX IS OWNED BY HOME FORWARD-THE COUNTY HOUSING AUTHORITY. ADD LISA BALICK TALKED WITH THEM TODAY ABOUT THE COMPLAINTS. SHE JOINS US LIVE FROM NORTHWEST PORTLAND LISA: I TALKED WITH A WOMAN BY PHONE WHO LIVES HERE. SHE’S IN THE HOSPITAL. SHE SAYS STRESS FROM DEALING WITH THE BEDBUGS PUT HER THERE. SHE SAYS PEOPLE BLAME THE HOMELESS MOVING IN. I STARTED FEELING ITCHY IN MY CHAIR. THEN I FELT A BEDBUG ON ME. DOROTHY HOLLAND’S LIVED IN HER BUILDING FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. SHE SAYS BEDBUGS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM, BUT NOT LIKE THIS. IT STARTED OUT BEING RE-YOU COULD KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL. NOW IT’S TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL. SHE TELLS ME SHE HAD GET RID OF HER FURNITURE AS PART OF THE PROCESS TO GET RID OF THE BUGS. SHE AND SOME OF THE OTHERS WHO LIVE HERE BLAME HOMELESS PEOPLE WHO HAVE MOVED IN. THEY BRING THE MAN OFF THE STREETS. THEY DON’T GET THEIR STUFF, WHERE IT’S BEEN. THEY DRAG EVERYTHING IN. IT’S GOT COCKROACHES, BEDBUGS, FLIES. DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE? I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE COME IN, LIKE SHE SAID, THAT ARE’S GO SUCK AS THE — THAT ARE SO SCUZZY, THAT’S ALL IT COULD BE. THEY SHOULD CHECK EVERYTHING, THE CLOTHING AND ALL OF THAT, BEFORE THEY LET PEOPLE IN, AND THEN MAYBE THERE WON’T BE ANY PROBLEM. I WENT TO HOME FORWARD, WHO OWNS AND OPERATES THE PROPERTY. HE TELLS ME THEY DON’T LAY THE BLAME WITH THE HOMELESS. I CERTAINLY WOULDN’T BLAME THE HOMELESSNESS CRISIS IN PORTLAND FOR THAT. BUT OUR PEOPLE CHECKED BEFORE THEY COME IN, THEIR BELONGINGS, TO SEE IF THEY DO INDEED HAVE ANY KIND OF INFESTATION? SOME OF OUR PROPERTIES ARE SET UP FOR THAT. GENERALLY, OUR FOCUS IS GETTING PEOPLE HOUSED. WHEN I PRESSED FURTHER FOR ANSWERS, THEY SAID THEY CANNOT INSPECT POSSESSIONS.

  1. Thanks for sharing.  Bed Bugs like to hide in small cracks and crevices close to a human environment. They can be found behind baseboards, wallpaper, upholstery, and in furniture crevices. Beg bugs are also known to survive in temporary or alternative habitats, such as backpacks and under the seats in cars, busses and trains.
